Maestro music font finale6/14/2023 ![]() So when people saw many of the first notation apps - Finale being a big one - it appeared "too light" to them. Most early notation programs had print out that was very "crisp" and "clean" and on good resolution printers available even at that time they were IMHO beautiful.īut the problem was, musicians were used to reading scores that had been engraved in the 1800s and were copied so many times the plates had worn down, gotten ink residue in crevices, and printing techniques meant there was also "soaking into the paper" making edges less sharp - so it was "blobby" and "blurry" and things like that. Sibelius started with Opus then went to Helsinki. Petrucci was Finale's original font, the current one is Maestro. ![]() I think it's main drawback was it didn't have that many symbols. Years ago a font named Sonata was developed and it was very elegant and many people still swear by it. Some of the things are not completely accurate - like if you switch between some the staccato dots will move off center - but they're not like that in the real font - but the shape is what you want to pay attention to. There's also a site where you can select 2 different fonts and 1 of 5 musical excerpts and toggle between them!
